On September 8, 2025, the Ministry of Education announced an accessibility renewal grant, providing school boards across the province funding to implement accessibility improvements relating to building infrastructure. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) intends to engage multiple architectural firms experienced in accessibility retrofits in existing buildings to act as the prime consultant in the provision of architectural design and contract administration services for the new accessibility improvements program. 

Each proponent is required to assemble a group of experienced sub-consultants to provide the required professional services to successfully complete the project as presented in this document.

Project Description

The Toronto District School Board has over 500 operating schools, many of which are not accessible. To address this, the TDSB has developed a strategic plan to use Ministry of Education funding—along with other sources—to improve accessibility across the system. The initiative focuses on ten bundles involving thirty-six school facilities, forming a continuous, accessible learning pathway from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. While full compliance with current Building Code and AODA standards may not be achievable, the TDSB aims to make meaningful improvements for students, staff, and the community. These improvements include accessible parking, exterior pathways, entrances, interior routes, and barrier-free washrooms.
